And thanks to my daughter Isabelle for modeling this dress for me.
She has some serious attitude.
Today I am sharing a dress I made back in September.
I like adapting trends into the clothes I make and the high low hem and celestial prints were big in September and still seem to be hanging around. We are getting some mileage out of this dress here!
My first inspiration for the dress was some galaxy printed silk I bought in the downtown LA fabric district. The silk fabric was an over run from a designer, and very current, although it had debuted on the New York catwalks for Resort 2011.
It often takes one or two years for a style to go from high fashion to the knock offs you see in the mall.
At the time, I was only just hearing about galaxy prints from the bigger designers.
I often let the fabric I choose decide the design I am going to make vs. buying or designing a pattern, then choosing a fabric to go with it.
I guess I am a fabric-centrist!

I drafted the dress myself.
Since I made this dress, many celestial dresses have popped up on the web and the internet is now teeming with them
For example, this Modcloth dress below which debuted in January.
So I guess in this case, I had the high low galaxy print dress idea first!

Once you learn to make your own clothes, you are no longer a slave to what you can find in your local stores.
A few years ago before I started sewing, I was obsessed with finding just the right pair of sailor pants. I searched high and low locally, and could not find a pair. I finally found a pair online, ordered them and the fit was all wrong. I rarely wore them.
How many hours did I waste in this fruitless obsession? I could have made three pairs of pants in the time I wasted driving back and forth….
Thank goodness, now I can just make my own.
