Red Letters: Living a Faith That Bleeds by Tom Davis
This book addresses how the church has (or rather HASN'T) followed the words of Christ when it comes to taking care of and feeding the poor, weary, ill, fatherless, etc. With so many orphans in our world, where is the church? Where are we when millions die from hunger? With millions dying from AIDS in Africa, where is the church? The world is relying on politicians and celebrities to bring awareness to these issues. We are relying on governments to reach out and help SAVE THE LIVES of these innocent children. The taboo of HIV and the transmission process may be one thing that keeps the church from reaching out, being the hands and feet of Jesus, in this situation. Unfortunately, while this happens we miss the fact that many of the people infected are children born with the disease. Worse yet, many infected are CHILDREN who have been forced into prostitution or worse. Many are women whose husband's infidelity brings the disease to her doorstep.
As a woman who is about to give birth to my third child I wonder what I would do in this situation. IF I had AIDS and gave birth to a baby in a land where food is scarce, would I allow my baby to starve or would I breast feed the baby? Would I even know that the disease could be spread this way?
Red Letters asks us all to take a look at the facts (and it includes plenty), examine the words of Jesus and then search our souls. What should our reaction be?
